Italy Are Euro 2020 Champs After Beating England at Wembley

0 228

The Euro 2020 final between England and Italy was a match laced with drama and emotion as both nations fiercely fought for one of the most prestigious titles in sports entertainment. Ultimately the match came to a dramatic climax as Italy rose to victory in a penalty shootout – despite playing at Wembley stadium (the home of the English).

The match began as intensely as expected with England taking the lead just 2 minutes after kickoff as Left-Back, Luke Shaw professionally put the ball in the back of the net beating the young Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. This goal shook the Italians as they had barely settled into the game. While the ecstatic Englishmen gained a great deal of confidence after this very early goal.

As the game progressed the Italians became more and more comfortable and dominated the play despite conceding so early. Their dominance was partially due to the fact that (for some odd reason) the English manager, Gareth Southgate opted to apply more defensive tactics within the match even though the English squad was brimming with youthful offensive talent that could hurt any team in the world.

Italy’s dominance was evident in the way they had most of the ball possession (66%) as well as the number of shots at goal (19 shots in comparison to England’s 6 shots). This deliberate dominance finally paid off as veteran Leonardo Bonucci was able to cheekily equalize off a corner kick in the 67th minute allowing for the Italians to take the game to extra-time.

Rashford Laments Loss

Extra time saw the introduction of the mercurial Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford as well as his club teammate Jadon Sancho. These two were brought onto the pitch as precautionary penalty takers that would allow England to win their first title in over 2 decades.

The penalty shootout reared its ugly head after a grueling 120 minutes that ended with the scoreboard tied at 1 apiece. The shootout was arguably the most dramatic chapter of this final, filled with determined warriors looking to propel their country’s name and image into the history books for eternity.

The shootout ended 3-2 with both goalkeepers pulling off 2 brilliant saves, however, Italy emerged victorious earning themselves their well-deserved crown at the summit of Europe’s elite soccer game players.

Finally, the Euros 2020 ended entertainingly as the Italians overcame the youthful talent of the English team. However, the performance of this English squad during the course of the tournament indicates to the world that they WILL be a force to be reckoned with in the very near future.
