Lil Wayne’s ‘Tha Carter V’ album got a battered review

For all the hype. For all the anticipation. For all the proclamations of “best rapper alive.”

For all that and more, “Tha Carter V” doesn’t deliver.

The past few years have been trying for Lil Wayne, who originally planned to release the record in 2014. After disputes with his label and its head, Birdman, it was continually delayed. Finally released from his contract, Wayne released the album on his 36th birthday.

All the hype that has followed the album, supposedly the last in his loved Carter series of records, has been huge. But it’s sadly not deserved.

For starters, there are 23 tracks on this long-awaited release. And as usual, Lil Wayne could use an editor, someone to tell him what to keep and what to cut. There’s simply too many bland tracks on “Tha Carter V,” and the whole enterprise would be stronger if the lagging tracks were culled.

It’s a full 90 minutes, and it lags. “What About Me” is boring. “Hittas” just meanders.
