Lionel Messi is the 2019 Ballon d’Or Winner. This brings his total Ballon d’Or titles to a whopping 6th times. Lionel Messi beat Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to win 2019 Ballon d’Or award.
Having being announced the world’s best men’s footballer at the Ballon d’Or Awards 2019 ceremony in Paris, France. Lionel Messi became the first footballer in history to have scored the Ballon d’Or Awards for 6 times.
Messi enjoyed a stellar individual campaign despite European disappointment for his club FC Barcelona. The diminutive Argentine scored 51 times in 50 appearances last season and had already racked up 40 goals in 2019, which is by far the most goals any player has scored this year. Apart from his 51 goals, the Blaugrana talisman also recorded a high 22 assists as Barcelona strolled to the La Liga title last season. He, however, failed to inspire his team to Champions League win despite scoring 12 times in the competition in 16 matches.
Messi edges ahead of five-time winner Ronaldo following victories in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
“Ten years ago I received my first Ballon d’Or, guided by my three brothers,” Messi told the audience. “Today I receive my sixth, guided by my wife and children.”
Liverpool’s Dutch defender Van Dijk, who was voted into second place, hailed Messi and Ronaldo.
